The first season of the Narutoanime series is directed by Hayato Date, and produced by Studio Pierrot and TV Tokyo.^[1] Based on Masashi Kishimoto's manga series, the season follows Naruto Uzumaki living in the Hidden Leaf Village, determined to become the next Hokage and gain the respect of the villagers. The first season ran from October 3, 2002 to November 5, 2003 on TV Tokyo.^[2] It was also released with the English version from September 2005 to November 2006 on Cartoon Network's Toonami and YTV's Bionix programming blocks.^[3]^[4]^[5]

In Japan, the season released in both VHS and DVD format.^[6] A total of twelve volumes were released by Sony Pictures Entertainment between January 1 and December 3, 2003.^[7]^[8] Episodes from this season were later released on nine DVD compilations by Viz Media between March 28, 2006 and February 20, 2007,^[9]^[10] with two compilations of thirteen and twelve episodes released for the first season.^[11]^[12] The first of these compilations was nominated at the American Anime Awards for best package design.^[13] In 2009, Viz released another two DVD boxes containing episodes 1-25 and 26-52, respectively.^[14]^[15]

Six pieces of theme music are used for the episodes; two opening themes and two closing themes in the Japanese episodes and a single theme for the openings and endings in the English-dubbed version. The two Japanese opening themes are 'Rocks' (R★O★C★K★S) by Hound Dog, used for the first twenty-five episodes, with the rest using 'Haruka Kanata' (遥か彼方, lit. Far Away) by Asian Kung-Fu Generation.^[16]^[17] The three closing themes are 'Wind' by Akeboshi (used until episode 25), 'Harmonia' by Rythem (used for episodes 26 to 52), and 'Viva Rock' by Orange Range (used for the remaining episodes).^[18]^[19] The opening and ending theme for the English airing is 'Rise' by Jeremy Sweet and Ian Nickus, with an instrumental version played as the closing theme.^[20]

Naruto Uzumaki is a twelve-year-old ninja living in the Hidden Leaf Village under harsh ridicule from the villagers, having defaced a monument dedicated to the four Hokage leaders out of a need for acknowledgement. Naruto's teacher Iruka Umino reprimands Naruto for putting graffiti on each face statues, later hearing Naruto's aspirations of becoming Hokage to become respected by the villages. The following day, being held back from graduating the Ninja Academy after a botched clone jutsu, Naruto is tricked by an academy teacher named Mizuki into stealing a scroll containing the secret ninjutsu from the Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi that night. Iruka intercepts Naruto as Mizuki was going to kill the boy and leave the village with the stolen scroll, Mizuki revealing to Naruto that villagers were ordered to reveal him as a host to a demon fox called the Nine Tails which devastated their village twelve years ago. Mizuki explains this to be reason Naruto is hated, adding that Iruka's parents were killed by the Nine Tails. But a remorseful Iruka protects Naruto while telling the boy they have a lot in common, spurring Naruto to use the Shadow Clone jutsu he learned from the scroll to overwhelm Mizuki. Soon after Iruka uses Naruto's ability to use shadow clones to justify his graduation from the Ninja Academy.

While Naruto gets into an argument with Hiruzen over how he wanted to present himself on the photo of Ninja Registration Form, the Hokage is attacked by a small boy, who is revealed to be his grandson Konohamaru Sarutobi. While following Naruto, who is the first person to not see him solely as the Hokage's grandson, Konohamaru asks to be taught the Sexy Jutsu transformation that Naruto used on Hiruzen. In the process, Konohamaru reveals his own reasons for wanting to become Hokage and his desire to be recognised for his own achievements. The two are eventually found by Konohamaru's mentor Ebisu, who sees Naruto as a bad influence on Konohamaru, with the resultant confrontation ending after Naruto uses Ebisu's lust against him, by combining his Sexy Jutsu and the Shadow Clone Jutsu to produce the overwhelming Harem Jutsu. Through Naruto's guidance, Konohamaru is able to accept that he cannot follow in his grandfather's footsteps by his name alone.
3	'Sasuke and Sakura: Friends or Foes?' Transcription: 'Shukuteki!? Sasuke to Sakura' (Japanese: 宿敵!?サスケとサクラ)	October 17, 2002	September 17, 2005
Once graduated from the Ninja Academy, having drank some milk before meeting up with his former classmates, Naruto is assigned to be a member of a three-person squad before undergoing a test to obtain the rank of Genin. He is put into Team 7, along with Sasuke Uchiha, his long-time rival, and Sakura Haruno, whom he has feelings for despite her own feeling for Sasuke. Knowing of Sakura's feelings for Sasuke, Naruto formulated a scheme to dispose of his rival and pose as Sasuke to get close to Sakura. But at the last second, Naruto is forced to go to the bathroom while the real Sasuke somehow escapes and runs into Sakura while searching for Naruto. After expressing disgust toward Sakura when she blames Naruto's stupidity on not having parents, Sasuke finds Naruto after he was forced to ditch a guilt-driven Sakura to go to the bathroom again, with their confrontation short-lived. Meanwhile, Naruto's stomach pains are revealed to be the result of drinking long-expired milk earlier as Hiruzen briefs the Jonin instructor to mentor Naruto and his teammates.
4	'Pass or Fail: Survival Test' Transcription: 'Shiren! Sabaibaru enshū' (Japanese: 試練!サバイバル演習)	October 24, 2002	September 24, 2005
As their classmates gradually all meet up with their [Jonin instructors who will decide whether they are fit to become Genin, Team 7 are forced to wait for theirs. Eventually, after Naruto sets up a juvenile trap, he and his group meet their instructor: Kakashi Hatake. Appearing to be a slacker, Kakashi takes the day to let his students each introduce themselves and tell each other their desires and aims: Naruto states that his dream is to become Hokage, Sakura seems to embarrassed by hers to say them publicly, and Sasuke declares his intent to restore his clan by killing an unnamed person. With the introductions over, Kakashi tells Team 7 that their test will begin tomorrow and that they are not to eat before then. The next day, after forcing Team 7 to wait for him again, Kakashi explains that the test entails the seizure of one of two bells from his person, the catch being that only two of the prospective Genin will pass while third is sent back to the Academy. While Sasuke and Sakura hide themselves away as the test begins, Naruto attempts to face Kakashi head-on with his Shadow Clone Technique, which is easily countered, and then falls for a snare trap. Taking advantage of Kakashi lecturing Naruto about falling for obvious traps, Sasuke seemingly takes out the instructor with shuriken and kunai knives.
5	'You Failed! Kakashi's Final Decision' Transcription: 'Shikkaku? Kakashi no Ketsuron' (Japanese: 失格?カカシの結論)	October 31, 2002	October 1, 2005
After his sneak attack failed, Sasuke attempts to fight Kakashi before being buried up to his neck underground. From there, Kakashi subjects Sakura to a genjutsu of Sasuke bleeding to death before dealing with Naruto when he decides to help himself to everyone's lunches. Once the time limit for the test is reached, Naruto is tied to a pole, and Kakashi deems all members of Team 7 utter failures as he reveals that his test was impossible for them, due to their lack of teamwork during the exercise. From there, Kakashi offers to give Team 7 one final chance and leaves them with a single order to follow: not to feed Naruto. However, knowing that they need Naruto at full strength for what Kakashi has in store for a make-up test, Sasuke and Sakura feed Naruto. Having watched the entire event, Kakashi dramatically appears before them. As Kakashi apparently prepares to punish them all, Sakura stands up to him, explaining that they gave Naruto food because he's a member of their team. Ultimately, finding a group who actually met his test's standards, Kakashi decides to pass Team 7 and accepts them as his students. From there, Kakashi reveals that the other teams he tested failed not because of their failures in the exercise, but because of their inability to see through the deception and work as a team. He explains the essential need for ninja groups to work as a unit, as well as stating his own ideal that, while ninja who break the rules are scum, those who abandon their friends are worse than scum.
6	'A Dangerous Mission! Journey to the Land of Waves!' Transcription: 'Jūyō ninmu! Nami no Kuni e chō-shuppatsu!' (Japanese: 重要任務!波の国へ超出発!)	November 7, 2002	October 8, 2005
After Team 7 completes a few miscellaneous D-ranked missions, Naruto relentlessly asks Hiruzen for a higher level mission, and they are eventually assigned to escort a bridge builder named Tazuna back to the Land of Waves. But they are ambushed along the way by the Demon Brothers, two Chunin from the Hidden Mist Village in the Land of Water. Though it appeared they killed him as they go after Team 7 and Tazuna, the Demon Brothers learned that Kakashi was aware of their presence and faked his death to catch them off-guard and see his students in action. While applauding Sasuke for holding off the Demon Brothers and Sakura for guarding Tazuna, Kakashi expresses disappointment in how poorly Naruto handled the situation and got himself poisoned. But Naruto refuses to quit the mission, and with Sasuke's taunting getting to him, uses a kunai to stab his hand to bleed out the poison while making a promise to never back down again. Though Kakashi decides to have Naruto's self-inflicted wound dealt with, he is amazed by the boy's rapid healing and wonders if it is the Nine-Tails's doing. Elsewhere, a man named Gato confronts the Demon Brothers' boss for his subordinates' failure to assassinate Tazuna. Threatening Gato with his large sword, the figure decides to handle the job personally.
7	'The Assassin of the Mist!' Transcription: 'Kiri no ansatsusha!' (Japanese: 霧の暗殺者!)	November 14, 2002	October 15, 2005
On the way to the Land of Waves, with Kakashi threatening to abandon the mission if not provided an adequate explanation for lying about the mission's difficulty level, Tazuna reveals his desire to build a bridge to save the impoverished Land of Waves from the wealthy shipping-magnate Gato. Hearing his story, Team 7 agree to go through with the mission regardless for humanitarian reasons. But once on the bridge, the group is ambushed by Zabuza Momochi, a rogue ninja from the Hidden Mist Village who works for Gato. Refusing to hand Tazuna over, Kakashi is forced to reveal a strange eye. The former confused as to how Kakashi obtained it, Sasuke and Zabuza both recognise the strange eye as a Sharingan. While Team 7 protects Tazuna, Kakashi engages Zabuza, both using clones to distract the other to get them from behind.

Kakashi is eventually caught off-guard and is captured in the Water Prison Technique. With Kakashi immobilised, Zabuza creates a water clone to go after the rest of Team 7 and Tazuna. Though Kakashi tells his students to run, Naruto remembers the promise he made to himself and decides to fight to save Kakashi and keep Tazuna alive. With Naruto using his transformation skills with Sasuke's expertise with a Fuma Shuriken, the two youths succeed in forcing Zabuza to release Kakashi in order to avoid Naruto's kunai.
9	'Kakashi: Sharingan Warrior' Transcription: 'Sharingan no Kakashi' (Japanese: 写輪眼のカカシ)	November 28, 2002	October 29, 2005
Once freed from the Water Prison, Kakashi uses his Sharingan to replicate many of Zabuza's water-based attacks, causing him to become agitated and is easily defeated. At the last second, Zabuza is seemingly killed by a young masked hunter ninja from the Hidden Mist Village. Naruto is angry and jealous that someone so young could easily defeat an opponent that gave Team 7 so much trouble, but Kakashi says that there are many ninja younger than Naruto yet stronger than himself. The hunter-ninja leaves with Zabuza's body, and Kakashi then collapses from fatigue as a result of using his Sharingan for too long.
10	'The Forest of Chakra' Transcription: 'Chakura no mori' (Japanese: チャクラの森)	December 5, 2002	November 5, 2005
Brought to Tazuna's home to recover from his fight with Zabuza, Naruto meets the bridge builder's grandson Inari, while Kakashi awakens realizing that there were numerous inconsistencies between the actions of the masked youth and that of other hunter-nin. Expecting to face Zabuza again, Kakashi decides to take Team 7 to the woods to teach them chakra control by having them walk up a tree by focusing chakra beneath their feet. While Sakura was successful on her first try, both Naruto and Sasuke had to attempt it numerous times. Elsewhere, revealed to be Zabuza's follower, the masked youth known as Haku tends to Zabuza's wounds as the swordsman intends to settle things with Kakashi once fully healed in a week's time.
11	'The Land Where a Hero Once Lived' Transcription: 'Eiyū no ita kuni' (Japanese: 英雄のいた国)	December 12, 2002	November 12, 2005
While Naruto and Sasuke try to outdo each other in their Tree Climbing Practice, Sakura accompanies Tazuna and is astonished by the poverty and fear in the Land of Waves. Following dinner, Sakura asks about Inari staring at the torn family photo on the wall, but the boy runs off with his mother Tsunami chasing after him. Tazuna then explains that the man torn from the picture, named Kaiza, was once a hero in the Land of Waves whom Inari looked up to. When Gato arrived, Kaiza was executed by Gato's men to serve as an example of anyone who opposes Gato, which traumatised Inari greatly. Moved by the story, Naruto resumes his training with the intent to prove to Inari that there are still heroes in the world.
12	'Battle on the Bridge! Zabuza Returns!!' Transcription: 'Kyōjō kessen! Zabuza futatabi!!' (Japanese: 橋上決戦!ザブザ再び!!)	December 19, 2002	November 19, 2005
Taking a nap after training in the woods, Naruto is awoken by someone whom he thought was a girl. Eventually learning that the person is actually a boy, but unaware that he is the masked youth Haku, Naruto gets into an exchange of ideals and morals before the two part ways. Once found by Sasuke, Naruto resumes his Tree Climbing Practice into the evening until he and Sasuke finally make it to the top of their respective trees. Naruto and Sasuke return triumphantly to Tazuna's home, with Naruto cheerful yet completely drained from the effort. Inari is disturbed by the sight of Naruto, thinking about Kaiza and gets into a heated dispute with Naruto, who leaves while calling him a coward. Later that night, Kakashi tells a despondent Inari that Naruto understands the boy's pain from his own hardships. The next morning, deciding to let Naruto sleep in, Kakashi, Sasuke, and Sakura escort Tazuna to work. Upon arriving at the bridge, they find Tazuna's workers unconscious with Zabuza and a masked Haku revealing themselves as the culprits.

At Tazuna's house, two of Gato's thugs arrive to kidnap Tsunami. Inari musters his courage in an attempt to stop them, but is saved when Naruto defeats them. Before leaving to join the others at the bridge, Naruto apologises to Inari for calling him a coward and acknowledges his bravery. On the bridge, as Kakashi engages Zabuza, Sasuke's newly gained speed gives him an advantage against Haku before the masked ninja traps him in his personal Crystal Ice Mirrors Technique.
14	'The Number One Hyperactive, Knucklehead Ninja Joins the Fight!!' Transcription: 'Igaisei nanbā wan, Naruto sansen!' (Japanese: 意外性No. 1, ナルト参戦!)	January 9, 2003	December 3, 2005
Having arrived, with Kakashi preoccupied with Zabuza, Naruto attempts to help Sasuke by attacking the Crystal Ice Mirrors from the outside while Sasuke attacks from the inside. But Naruto's unfamiliarity with Haku's abilities traps him as he and Sasuke are forced to work together against Haku, who sees that he must make an exception to his no killing policy.

Naruto and Sasuke both attempt to destroy the ice mirrors, their respective Shadow Clone and Fireball Techniques having no effect. Realizing that Haku's Crystal Ice Mirrors are actually an Ice-Style Kekkei Genkai, a genetic trait in certain ninja, Kakashi decides to use his Sharingan to quickly end his fight with Zabuza. But Haku told him about Kakashi's methods during their last fight, Zabuza has the advantage as he uses his Hidden Mist technique to counter Kakashi's Sharingan and force the ninja to anticipate his opponent's next move. While Kakashi rushes to Tazuna and Sakura under the assumption that Zabuza would attack them, he ends up leaving him himself open from behind as Zabuza lands a strike with his Kubikiribōchō sword.

Naruto and Sasuke are both injured severely from Haku's Crystal Ice Mirrors before the latter reveals his Uchiha lineage by awakening his clan's own inherit ability: the Sharingan. With Sasuke's Sharingan allowing him to track Haku's incredibly fast movements, he is deemed a bigger threat than Naruto and a volley of senbon [fr] is used to force Sasuke to take a hit meant for his teammate. Believing his teammate had died in his arms, Naruto is enraged and unconsciously taps into the Nine-Tails's chakra to heal his wounds while punching Haku.

Inari is shown running from door to door throughout the Land of Waves, trying to rally the villagers into defending Tazuna and the bridge. Meanwhile, The Nine-Tails chakra recedes after Naruto used to punch Haku while dispelling his mirrors, breaking his opponent's mask and revealing him as the youth he previously conversed with. Asking Naruto to kill him as he had failed Zabuza, a flashback reveals that he had inherited his ability from his mother as they leaved in the Land of Water. But as those with Kekkei Genkai are demonized, Haku is forced to watch his mother murdered by his father before subconsciously invoking his powers to kill his father and the angry mob. Some time after, Haku was found by Zabuza and trained to hone his skills to be of use to the swordsman. Meanwhile, having sensed Naruto only released a fraction of the Nine-Tails's chakra, Kakashi summons a number of dogs to find and restrain Zabuza. At that time, Haku manages to convince Naruto to kill him before seeing Kakashi about to finish Zabuza off with his Lightning Blade Technique.
18	'The Weapons Known as Shinobi' Transcription: 'Shinobi to iu na no dōgu' (Japanese: 忍という名の道具)	February 6, 2003	January 7, 2006
Though he agrees to kill Haku, Naruto instead witnesses Haku sacrificing himself to protect Zabuza from Kakashi's Lightning Blade. Unfazed by his apprentice's sacrifice, Zabuza continues attacking Kakashi while Tazuna accompanies Sakura to Sasuke's body. Kakashi manages to disable Zabuza's arms before their battle is interrupted by Gato and his men, the criminal intending to kill Zabuza and everyone else present. Meanwhile, disappointed in his attempts to rally the villagers support for the bridge, Inari sets out alone but finds a crowd waiting for him outside.

Now fired by Gato, Zabuza no longer sees a reason to fight Kakashi and is unfazed when his former employer kicks Haku's corpse. Though Zabuza sees Haku as nothing more than a tool, he is moved by Naruto's words as he tearfully acknowledges Haku's sacrifice. With Kakashi telling Naruto not to interfere out of respect, Zabuza redeems himself as a ninja by enduring multiple stabs and beatings to reach Gato and killing him with the kunai he placed in his mouth. Zabuza collapses as Gato's men retreat when the villagers arrive, Team 7 are relieved to discover that Sasuke is still alive, having been spared any lethal injuries. Honouring Zabuza's dying wish to place him beside Haku, Kakashi assures his former enemy that he and Haku will go to the same place. Soon after, he and Team 7 give the two rogue ninjas a burial with Zabuza's Kubikiribōchō as a grave marker, and Naruto express his disdain for the notion that ninjas should strive to become merely tools and declares that he will find his own Ninja Way. As Team 7 leave for the Hidden Leaf, Tazuna proclaims to the village that the bridge will be called the Great Naruto Bridge to signify the strength that Naruto gave Inari, who in turn gave it to the whole town.
20	'A New Chapter Begins: The Chunin Exam!' Transcription: 'Shinshō totsunyū! Chūnin Shiken dattebayo' (Japanese: 新章突入!中忍試験だってばよ)	February 20, 2003	January 21, 2006
After their adventure in the Land of Waves, Team 7 has returned to doing miscellaneous missions, with Naruto's rivalry with Sasuke making matters worse to the point that Kakashi decides to call it a day and sends his students home. After Sasuke takes his leave, Naruto and Sakura meet up with Konohamaru and his friends Udon and Moegi. As antics ensue with him making Sakura mad, Konohamaru accidentally bumps into two foreign ninja. Despite advice from his older sister Temari (one of the two mystery ninja), Kankuro (the other) threatens to kill Konohamaru. After somehow tripping Naruto, Kankuro was about to hit Konohamaru when Sasuke hits the ninja with a stone. Just as Kankuro is about to attack Sasuke, he is stopped by his younger brother Gaara as Temari explains that they are ninja from the Hidden Sand Village in the Land of Wind who have arrived for the Chunin Exams.
21	'Identify Yourself: Powerful New Rivals' Transcription: 'Nanore! Arawareta kyōteki tachi!!' (Japanese: 名乗れ!現れた強敵たち!!)	February 27, 2003	January 28, 2006
Encountering the Sand Siblings, Team 7 learns that the three are ninja who have come from the Hidden Sand Village to participate in the Chunin Exams to be promoted to Chunin-level ninja. Elsewhere, meeting with Hiruzen on the matter, Kakashi, the Third Hokage's son Asuma Sarutobi, and Kurenai Yuhi all nominate their students for the Chunin Exams to Iruka's disbelief. Iruka challenges their decision as he believes Naruto and the others are not ready for the exam, but Kakashi explains to Iruka that they are no longer his students. The next morning, Kakashi gives Team 7 the application forms for the Chunin Exams with Sasuke and Naruto more than willing, while Sakura is uncertain. Later, each member of Team 7 is attacked by a mysterious ninja that they defeated in a one-on-one fight. The figure is revealed to be Iruka, who reports to Kakashi of approving his choice. Later, while making their way to site of the Chunin Exam, Team 7 meets Rock Lee and his teammates Neji Hyuga and Tenten. Though they leave to make their way to where the exams are, Team 7 is followed by Lee who intends to issue a challenge to Sasuke.

Following Team 7, and revealed to have a crush on Sakura, Lee challenges Sasuke to a battle. Feeling neglected in his teammates' shadows, Naruto's attempt to fight Lee himself only ended with him being quickly knocked out. Now interested to face an opponent calling himself the strongest Genin, Sasuke accepts his challenge but finds himself powerless against an opponent who uses taijutsu. Lee was about to finish the fight with his Dancing Leaf Shadow attack when a large turtle named Ningame appears. Soon after, as Naruto thinks Ningame is his mentor, Lee's actual mentor Might Guy appears on top of Ningame with Team 7 a bit taken back by Guy's tough love and motivational speech for Lee. Upon noticing them, Guy reveals himself to be a rival of Kakashi's before taking his leave after giving Lee a punishment task to complete. Before leaving, Lee confesses that he is not actually the strongest Genin, who is in fact someone else on his team, and that he only fought Sasuke to train himself. After Naruto pressures Sasuke over this turn of events, Team 7 reaches the room where the Exams are to take place.

Before entering the Chunin Exam hall, Team 7 are greeted by Kakashi, who informs them that all three of them had been required to consent to taking the exams before they would have been allowed in, and wished them luck. Once inside, Team 7 meet up with their classmates: Ino Yamanaka, Shikamaru Nara, and Choji Akimichi of Asuma's Team 10 and Shino Aburame, Hinata Hyuga, and Kiba Inuzuka of Kurenai's Team 8. The Rookie Nine have a spirited discussion before they meet an exam veteran named Kabuto Yakushi who informs them about each of the villages represented while also giving Sasuke information on Gaara and Lee. Though Kabuto intimidated the other Rookie Nine members by telling them that there were only elite Genin among the individuals taking the exams, Naruto loudly proclaims that he will beat every ninja in the room, to his friends' annoyance of being targeted by association. At that time, Kabuto is attacked by Team Dosu from the Hidden Sound Village for his earlier remark about their village. Although it appears that Kabuto dodged the attack, his glasses suddenly break and he becomes nauseated. Before the confrontation escalates any further, the examiner Ibiki Morino and his team enter to commence the Chunin Exams.

As everyone takes their seats, Ibiki explains that the first phase of the exam will be a written test where the teams with higher points continue to the next phase. Ibiki's assistants line the sides of the room to observe the Genin to ensure they do not cheat, with teams removed from the room if any member is caught cheating five times. With the exception of Naruto and Sakura, Sasuke and everyone else realise that the real test is to subtly cheat using their unique skills. While Sakura is able to answer the questions, Naruto is the opposite as he feels he must place all his faith in the final question, which will be given fifteen minutes before the test's end.

Forty-five minutes into the written portion of the Chūnin Exams, Ibiki announces that it is time for the tenth and final question. But he ominously states that while their team would fail the exam if they do not take it, failure to answer it correctly would result in the participant being barred from any future Chunin Exams. Fretting over the unpredicted turn of events, Naruto refuses to give in to fear with his outburst putting the minds of those remaining at ease. Seeing that no one else would be leaving, Ibiki reveals that the first nine questions were to test their skills in intelligence gathering while the final question was to test their resolve. Passing Ibiki's test, the proctor was amused to find that Naruto passed without answering any of the questions, while the remaining Genin meet their next examiner Anko Mitarashi the next day at the site of the second phase of the exam: the Forest of Death.

After receiving their scroll, each team enters the Forest of Death simultaneously.

A few minutes after entering the Forest of Death, Naruto leaves the team to relieve himself, but he is knocked out by a Genin from the Hidden Rain Village who mimics his appearance to infiltrate Team 7. Luckily, seeing through the disguise, Sasuke drives away the attacking Rain Genin. While he and his team mates go over a password to identify themselves in such a situation, Naruto is separated from the others by a powerful gust of wind before being swallowed by a giant snake. In the meantime, Sasuke and Sakura are disabled by a Grass ninja named Shiore. Before they even fight, Sasuke and Sakura have visions of their own deaths upon looking into Shiore's eyes, paralysing them with fear. Regaining his composure, Sasuke flees with Sakura as Shiore pursues. Luckily, having managed to kill the snake, Naruto arrives in time to save them both.

Despite Naruto's timely appearance, Sasuke offers Shiore the scroll in exchange for their lives. Sasuke then throws the scroll to Shiore but Naruto intercepts it. Naruto punches Sasuke during his attempt to convince Naruto to give the scroll up, causing Naruto to accuse Sasuke of being an impostor as the Sasuke he knew would never be so weak and cowardly. Shiore summons a giant snake and engages Naruto, who uses the Nine-Tails chakra to fight. Eventually, upon learning that his opponent is the host of the Nine-Tails, Shiore seals Naruto's ability to access the monster's power. As Naruto's unconscious body is saved by Sakura pinning it to a tree with a kunai in mid-air, Sasuke manages to muster the courage from Naruto's words to fight. Meanwhile, Anko learns of three faceless corpses found near the exams, one of them revealed to be Shiore, and recognizes the technique used to remove their faces.

After a protracted battle with the mysterious ninja posing as Shiore, Sasuke traps Shiore and uses the Dragon Flame technique to incinerate his attacker. However, Shiore is still alive with his face partially melted off, revealing part of Shiore's true face. After extending his neck to inflict Sasuke with an unidentified mark, the ninja introduces himself as Orochimaru. Burning the scroll he possessed, Orochimaru leaves while promising that Sasuke will look for him in the future. Anko eventually finds Orochimaru, revealed to be her former teacher, and unsuccessfully tries to kill him while learning that his target was Sasuke, and that any interference in the Chunin Exams to remove the youth from the proceedings would end terribly for the Hidden Leaf Village.

After the ordeal with Orochimaru, Sakura managed to move her team mates under a tree to tend to their wounds overnight. During this time, Sakura is unaware that her team are being watched by Team Dosu, and wards off a squirrel that they had placed a paper bomb onto, without knowing that it had been made into an explosive device. Soon after, the Sound Genin make their presence known as they reveal their intent to kill Sasuke while dealing with the numerous traps that Sakura had prepared to defend her teammates. Luckily, having been guided by the squirrel after saving it, Lee arrives to protect Sakura. As the battle ensued, Lee uses the Primary Lotus on Dosu but the impact is cushioned by Zaku Abumi and Lee is knocked out.

With her teammates and Lee all unconscious, Sakura is forced to fight on her own before one of the Sound Genin, Kin Tsuchi, grabs the girl by her hair and proceeds to insult her for her perceived vanity. This causes Sakura to remember her past with her own rival, Ino, and she is reminded of the reasons for growing her hair so long. She then decides to focus on being a strong ninja rather than just attractive, cutting her hair to free herself from Kin's grasp before attacking Zaku. Moved by Sakura's determination, Ino and the rest of Team 10 come to her aid.

Team 10 battles Team Dosu, each using their unique techniques to battle. However, though Ino uses her Mind Transfer technique on Kin, the Sound Genin regain the advantage before Sasuke suddenly awakens. Empowered by Orochimaru's curse mark, Sasuke becomes a cruel and sadistic monster as he easily defeats Zaku while breaking his arms. Terrified by Sasuke's extremely cruel brutality, Sakura stops him before he can inflict fatal injuries on either of the remaining Sound Genin. Deciding that they stand no chance, Dosu leaves their scroll behind so that he and his team can retreat without further harm.

Naruto awakens and, upon realising that they need another scroll to pass, decides to forge a new one, but has to open their existing scroll to do so, an action banned by the rules of the exam. However, before he could do so, Kabuto, separated from his team, stops him, stating that those who did would be rendered unconscious until the end of the exam. He then accompanies Team 7 to the tower in the center of the forest. Along the way, the group encounters a genjutsu set by the Rain Genin group whose teammate Sasuke had defeated previously. By the time they realise that they are not getting any closer to the center of the forest, they are attacked by a number of clones.

The team realizes they are in another genjutsu. In order to draw out the assailants, Naruto Uzumaki disguises several of his shadow clones as his teammates and fights the enemy clones all night. When the Rain Genin believe that Team 7 exhausted from combat, Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno and Kabuto corner them. After a brief struggle, Naruto knocks out the enemies and takes their scroll, at which point they head to the tower and meet with Kabuto's team. Unknown to Team 7, Kabuto submits all of the data he gathered on them to Orochimaru.

Team 7 opens its scrolls inside the tower, summoning Iruka to inform them that they made it in time. Hiruzen briefly speaks about what the exams are all about before entrusting Hayate Gekko to oversee the matches.

Hayate reveals that an unusually large number of Genin got through the second stage of the exam. A series of one-on-one preliminary matches will be held to reduce the number of people meaning that there will be a tournament for the next exam eliminating the loser and promoting the victor. Kabuto drops out immediately upon the notice, blaming his withdrawal on an injury sustained from an earlier part of the test. The preliminary matches are randomized with a machine and the dials end at Sasuke Uchiha versus Yoroi Akado. Before Sasuke heads into battle, Sakura tries to stop him saying that he will lose and get hurt severely if he doesn't use any chakra because it will surely awaken the cursed seal's power.

Sasuke fights Yoroi, but is handicapped by his inability to use chakra due to the danger of activating the cursed seal. Yoroi's ability to absorb chakra gives him an advantage. Sasuke, in the heat of battle, remembers Lee's attack on him and uses it to create his own variant of the taijutsu move: Lion's Barrage. After using the barrage, he manages to suppress his cursed seal and wins the exam match. Kakashi Hatake takes him to an isolated location to hinder the cursed seal, only to be confronted by Orochimaru as he finishes. Back at the tower, Shino Aburame and Zaku Abumi begin the next match.

Kankuro easily wins his battle against Misumi by tricking him into attacking his puppet Crow. Though Kankuro has Crow break Misumi's ribs, the opponent survives due to his ability to contort himself. The fourth match is between Sakura and Ino. After the two exchange insults, they have flash backs from when they were friends before Sakura was forced to end it after both learn that they each have a crush on Sasuke. Though Ino was restraining herself because of their past, she decides to follow Sakura's example and take the battle seriously.

Sakura and Ino are evenly matched. They both use illusion clone jutsu, chakra string jutsu and others. In a desperate move, Ino uses her Mind Transfer Jutsu to take control over Sakura's body and have her forfeit. But Naruto's cheering of Sakura allows her Inner Sakura to force Ino out of her body. The two girls having been pushed to their limits, Ino and Sakura decide to end the battle as they charge each other to land a powerful punch on each other. Though Sakura and Ino ended up being both eliminated after a double knockout, the ordeal did rekindle their friendship.

Although Kin ensnares Shikamaru in a genjutsu, he captures her in his Shadow Imitation Technique. He forces her to knock herself unconscious. The next combatants are randomized putting everyone into awaiting excitements and in the end are revealed to be Naruto and Kiba Inuzuka.

Kiba and his dog Akamaru continue to prove too much for Naruto. He uses his superior strength and speed to dominate the match. Consuming special military pills that enhance their chakra, Kiba and Akamaru use a combination of their speed and special signature Man-Beast Clone Jutsu to overwhelm Naruto.

As the battle continues, Naruto manages to trick Kiba into knocking Akamaru out. Despite this, Naruto is still at a disadvantage due to Kiba's pill-enhanced chakra as well as his superior strength and speed. Kiba proves to be too fast for Naruto to the point that Naruto doesn't even have time to perform any jutsu. Using his speed to get behind Naruto, Kiba is about to land a finishing blow. Before he can make contact, however, Naruto accidentally farts into his face, stopping him in his tracks. Due to Kiba's greatly enhanced sense of smell, he is overwhelmed by the odor as Naruto defeats him with by using his Shadow Clones in his own version of Sasuke's Lion Barrage: Uzumaki Barrage.

The next match is Hinata Hyuga against Neji Hyuga, who is revealed to be her cousin from the branch house of the Hyuga clan. Neji intimidates and berates his cousin, almost convincing her to forfeit. But Naruto's cheering stirs Hinata to fight her cousin in a duel using their clan's Gentle Fist style, which uses bursts of chakra to damage the opponent's internal organs.

Neji reveals that he had been toying with Hinata, and he disables her ability to use chakra with the Gentle Fist style. Hinata, inspired by Naruto, refuses to give up. She tells Neji that she believes that he is suffering more from fighting his destiny. Angered, Neji attempts a fatal blow, but four observing Jonin halt him. Hinata collapses into cardiac arrest shortly after, and Naruto vows to avenge her.

The next set of matchups is Rock Lee against Gaara. At first, Lee's Strong Fist taijutsu is ineffective against Gaara's wall of sand that automatically rises to protect him. Lee then removes the heavy leg weights he was wearing, drastically increasing his speed and allowing him to bypass Gaara's defense. Lee then uses his Primary Lotus, but only succeeds in destroying a clone made of sand.

Lee's increased speed overwhelms Gaara's sand defenses. Lee opens the Fifth Gate and uses his most powerful attack, Hidden Lotus. Lee's power, accuracy, strength and speed increase outstandingly, allowing Lee to inflict extreme injuries on Garra with a 5th gate barrage of his. Unfortunately for Lee, Gaara survives by softening his fall with sand and uses his sand coffin to crush Lee's left arm and leg. Gaara moves his sand to finish Lee, but Guy blocks the final attack. Lee, though unconscious due to the pain and covered in blood, rises to continue the battle, his desire to win fueling his broken body. At the end of the match, Rock Lee is crippled to the extent that he is unable to fight again. Guy regrets teaching Lee such dangerous techniques, but vacates the ring for the final match between Choji Akimichi and Dosu Kinuta

Despite having formulated a strategy beforehand, Choji quickly loses to Dosu, concluding the preliminaries. The nine qualifying Genin are assigned opponents, and they are all allowed to leave for a month of training before the finals. Elsewhere, Kabuto prepares to kidnap Sasuke under Orochimaru's orders, but he is stopped by Kakashi and is forced to retreat. Naruto later meets with Kakashi in hopes of training with him, but is given Ebisu as a replacement.

As Ebisu rushes to apprehend him, Jiraiya knocks him out with a single hit, leaving Naruto without a tutor.

After Jiraiya knocks out Ebisu, Naruto is left without a tutor. Naruto manages to convince Jiraiya to tutor him by using his Sexy Jutsu. While Jiraiya oversees Naruto's training, he quickly realizes that Naruto is the host of the Nine-Tails. Jiraiya unlocks the seal that Orochimaru had placed on Naruto in the forest, and Naruto quickly grasps the concept of walking on water. Afterwards, Jiraiya speaks with Naruto about his two kinds of chakra.

That night, having learned that he and his group were nothing more than tools for Orochimaru to test Sasuke, Dosu attempts to assassinate Gaara so he can ruin Orochimaru's plan by killing Sasuke during the finals. But Gaara quickly kills Dosu; this event is observed from a distance by Kabuto and the Hidden Sand Village's Jonin Baki as they confer about the planned invasion of Konohagakure by Sunagakure and Otogakure. When they find that their conversation was overheard by Hayate, Baki quickly murders him. The next day, Naruto resumes his training with Jiraiya. He signs a scroll that will allow him to summon toads. Upon trying to summon a toad, Naruto only manages to summon a tadpole.

Sakura visits the hospital to see Sasuke, but finds that Sasuke has left. While there, Sakura checks on Rock Lee. Elsewhere, the many finalists continue their training, with Naruto finally managing to summon a tadpole with hind-legs. Sasuke, himself, is off training with Kakashi.

Knowing that Naruto can only tap into the fox's chakra during life-or-death situations, Jiraiya takes Naruto to a local chasm and throws him in. Unable to stop himself from falling, Naruto enters his subconsciousness and meets the Nine Tails for the first time. Though the Nine Tails is hostile towards Naruto, he gives the boy a bit of his chakra out of self-interest. With the chakra, Naruto manages to summon a giant toad to stop his descent.

The giant toad, revealed to be named Gamabunta, is angry that he has been summoned in a pit and even angrier that Naruto is sitting on top of his head. Although Naruto informs Gamabunta that he summoned him, Gamabunta does not believe him. Determined to prove himself, Naruto rides atop Gamabunta's head until sunset, while Gamabunta tries to shake him off. Naruto falls shortly before sunset, but he earns Gamabunta's respect in the process. Gamabunta then takes Naruto to the hospital to rest.

As Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura prepare for the exam, a ninja with short hair and thick eyebrows named Rock Lee appears and challenges Sasuke to a duel.

Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura register for the Chunin Exam, which joins three ninjas as a team. In order to pass, not a single member is allowed to fail.

Naruto and his team begin the first exam, a written test. The exam proctor is an upper rank ninja and infamous expert in interrogation.

The proctor declares what seems like a harsh and unreasonable rule for question 10, the hardest part of the first exam.

Konohamaru, the grandson of the Leaf Village's Third Hokage, shows up at the Chunin Exam site.

Naruto and his fellow participants arrive at the Forest of Death, the site of the second part of the Chunin Exam.

The second exam starts in the Forest of Death. Sasuke notices that an enemy has disguised himself as Naruto.

Deep within the Hidden Leaf Village, sharp and cunning ninjas carry an ultimate power, while Naruto Uzumaki holds the ultimate secret inside.

Seeing Naruto furiously fight back against the Grass Ninja, Sasuke realizes that he was wrong to think about fleeing the scene of a battle.

After receiving the report from her staff, Anko senses that Orochimaru has snuck into the examination.

Protecting Sakura, who can no longer move, Lee battles the three Sound Ninjas himself.

While Sakura fends off the Sound Ninja attack by herself, the rival Ino team appears!

The Sound Ninjas depart after witnessing Sasuke's intense power. Naruto's team finally gets a moment of peace to recuperate.

To heal their wounds, Naruto and his team rest after their battle against the Sound Ninjas -- but they have only one day to complete the exam.

Naruto's team joins Kabuto on their journey to the tower, but on the way, they are trapped by the illusion technique of a low ranking ninja.

When Naruto and his team open the two scrolls after reaching the tower, Iruka suddenly appears.

The 21 ninjas that passed the second exam assemble for their next challenge.

The preliminaries for the third exam are one-on-one combat, and the first match is between Sasuke and Orochimaru's minion Yoroi.

As Kakashi releases Sasuke from the spell, Orochimaru shows up and expresses his desire for the power of Sharingan that the Uchiha clan holds.

The preliminaries continue as the next match pits Sand Ninja Gaara's teammate Kankuro against Orochimaru's minion Misumi.

The fourth match is between Sakura and Ino, who are childhood friends and competitors for the affection of Sasuke.

The fifth match is between Tenten and Temari. The sixth match is Shikamaru versus Kin.

In the seventh match, Naruto clashes against Kiba, who brings along his dog Akamaru.

By consuming Food Pills, Kiba and Akamaru increase their chakra levels and start their counterattack on Naruto.

Cousins Hinata and Neji of the Hyuga clan confront each other in the eighth match.

When Hinata goes up against Neji, he hits her pressure point by using his Byakugan (white eyes), and she almost loses consciousness.

Gaara finally appears in the ninth match, and his opponent is taijutsu (physical technique) specialist Lee.

Lee uses the banned technique Primary Lotus to attack Gaara.

Lee decides to use the forbidden move Hidden Lotus as a last resort.

In the final match of the preliminaries, Choji fights against Orochimaru's minion Dosu. When the preliminaries end, the Hokage reveals the third exam.

In preparation for the third exam that starts in a month, Naruto's former mentor, Kakashi, chooses Ebisu to train the young ninja.

Jiraiya, one of the legendary Three Ninjas, suddenly appears before Ebisu and Naruto. Naruto gives Jiraiya the nickname, 'Pervy Sage.'

The Sound Ninja Dosu appears and intends on defeating Gaara. But Gaara beats him soundly. Watching them are a Jonin of the Sand Village and Kabuto.

Naruto continues training under Jiraiya to master the summoning jutsu. But he has a hard time controlling the chakra of the Nine-tailed Fox.

It is three weeks since Naruto began training under Jiraiya. Naruto has been on the brink of collapse many times.

Naruto is able to draw out the Nine-Tailed chakra and utilize the summoning jutsu. Gamabunta appears and does not believe that Naruto summoned him.

On the day of the test, Gaara disappears from the inn where the Sand Ninjas are staying and goes to Hidden Leaf Hospital.

The day of the Exam finally arrives. Naruto's first opponent is Neji Hyuga.

Finally, Chunin Exam starts with the eight ninjas who qualified in the preliminaries. But Sasuke is nowhere to be found.

Naruto is unable to use his Shadow Clone Jutsu against Neji who can see chakra points!

Naruto and Neji's battle continues with Neji showing enormous power.

Defeated by Naruto, Neji is being taken to the hospital, when Neji's uncle Hiashi appears.

Sasuke's match is postponed and suddenly it is Shikamaru's turn. He has shown no eagerness to fight, thinking that his is merely a secondary match.

In Shikamaru and Temari's match, Shikamaru -- who had the upper hand -- suddenly makes a surprising decision!

Sasuke and Gaara'a anticipated match begins. Gaara eerily talks to himself, as though addressing someone.

Sauske's speed and moves are identical to Lee's Taijutsu. But Gaara is not an opponent who can be defeated with just Taijutsu.

Someone has used genjutsu to put everyone in the arena to sleep. The Sand Ninjas, led by Orochimaru, have begun their plan to destroy the village.

Sasuke finally catches up to Gaara, Temari and Kankuro. Kankuro escapes with Gaara, leaving Temari to face Sasuke.

The battle between the Hokage and Orochimaru rages on. The Hokage resorts to a jutsu unfamiliar to Orochimaru, known as the Reaper Death Seal.

Shino appears as Sasuke and Kankuro battle. Leaving Shino to handle Kankuro, Sasuke goes after Gaara.

Half of Gaara's body has transformed and Sasuke continues his battle against him.

By the time Naruto and Sakura catch up, Sasuke has exhausted his strength and collapsed.

Naruto is helpless against Gaara's immense power. While Naruto declares that he fights for his comrades, Gaara says he fights for himself.

Naruto is helpless against Gaara's overpowering strength. However, he sees Sasuke risking life and limb to save him and Sakura.

Gaara employs his Playing Possum Jutsu, which allows the Sand Spirit within him, Shukaku, to display its true power.

With every ounce of their power, Gaara and Naruto continue to fight. Determined to protect Sakura, Naruto attacks Gaara again and again.

Orochimaru's plan to destroy the Village Hidden in the Leaves is stopped. But the damage is extensive and work proceeds quickly to make repairs.

Kakashi arrives in the nick of time to help Asuma and Kurenai, and Itachi enters the fray as well. The battle between two Sharingan users begins.

Jiraiya and Naruto are on a journey to find Tsunade. Jiraiya's purpose is to protect Naruto from the clutches of the Akatsuki, and to train him.

Intent on confronting Itachi, Sasuke rushes to the town where Naruto is staying. On the way, tragic memories of his past come flooding back.

Jiraiya saves Naruto from Kisame. It turns out that Itachi and the Akatsuki organization are after Naruto to obtain the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox.

Deeply hurt mentally and physically, Sasuke is taken back to the Hidden Leaf Village by Guy. If only the medical specialist Tsunade were there..

Naruto begins his training with Jiraiya. The technique Naruto will learn was the trademark of the Fourth Hokage and took three years to master.

Naruto manages to complete the first step of his training. But the next step -- making a rubber ball explode with chakra -- proves to be difficult.

Orochimaru and Kabuto appear before Tsunade and Shizune. Orochimaru, injured by the Reaper Death Seal, seeks the former Sannin's medical expertise.

In exchange for healing his arms, Orochimaru offers to bring back to life both Tsunade's younger brother Nawaki and Dan, her sweetheart.

Naruto is incensed at the way Tsunade disrespects the position of Hokage and challenges her to a fight.

Naruto practices hard so he can win the necklace from Tsunade. Meanwhile, Tsunade is in a dilemma over Orochimaru's offer.

Gripped by the desire to see Nawaki and Dan, Tsunade almost succumbs to Orochimaru's tempting offer.

Orochimaru and Kabuto use a summoning jutsu to call forth a giant snake. Still drugged and unable to fully use his chakra, Jiraiya summons Gamakichi.

Naruto's ninja way is to never go back on his word. Naruto is seriously injured by Kabuto and hovers on the verge of death.

Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru all release their summoning jutsu. And a fierce battle begins.

As Tsunade, Naruto and the others head back to the Leaf Village where Tsunade will become the Fifth Hokage, they stop at a town with hot springs.

Naruto asks Tsunade to heal Sasuke and Lee before she is installed as the Hokage. After examining Lee, she tells him to not pursue becoming a shinobi.

Tsunade asks Lee whether he will quit pursuing the path of a ninja or choose to undergo a risky surgery with only a 50 percent chance of success.

Tsunade advises Lee to quit the path of the shinobi. Unable to master either ninjutsu or genjutsu, Lee has always been looked down upon by the others.

Naruto and his two squadmates have always wanted to see what Kakashi looks like under his mask. The three do whatever they can to reveal his face.

Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura are to protect the runners in a race being held during the Todoroki Shrine's ceremonial ritual held every four years.

The chief retainers think that Idate has made a farce of their traditional festival. Jirocho believes that Idate has fled with some plan in mind.

Naruto and his squad manage to catch up to Idate, only to find him hurt and unconscious with Aoi nearby.

Idate still trusts no one, and it's revealed that during the Chunin Exams, Idate's older brother was the proctor who posed the 10th question.

Boss Jirocho waits, confident that Idate will win. But Aoi, the ninja sent by the Wagarashi clan, stands in the way.

Shikamaru is promoted to chunin. Lee decides to undergo a dangerous surgery so he can remain a ninja. Sasuke broods over Naruto getting stronger.

Naruto and Sasuke release their ultimate weapons against each other, but Kakashi arrives to stop the fight. Sasuke seeks revenge against his brother.

The Sound Ninja Four suddenly appear before Sasuke. Sakura is concerned about the Curse Mark placed on Sasuke by Orochimaru.

Sakura's pleas fall on deaf ears, and Sasuke leaves Hidden Leaf Village. Tsunade summons Shikamaru to lead his first mission as a chunin.

The Sound Ninja Four race toward Orochimaru's lair with Sasuke. They're challenged by the jonin Genma and Raido, but the Leaf ninja are fatigued.

Naruto and the others are trapped in Jirobo's Earth Dome Prison. The five slowly weaken as Jirobo drains their chakra from without.

Freed from the Earth Dome Prison, Shikamaru and the others take off after the remaining Sound while Choji stays behind to face his challenger alone.

After Choji takes the yellow pill, it looks as if he may win the battle, until Jirobo transforms into Second State. Choji has only one option left.

Assuming the Leaf squad could never get past Jirobo, the remaining Sound ninjas don't bother to lay traps along the way, so Shikamaru poses as Jirobo.

Neji takes on Kidomaru while the others pursue Sasuke and the remaining Sound ninja. Neji uses his Gentle Fist and Kidomaru must find Neji's weakness.

Kidomaru changes tactics and creates a bow and arrow to attack Neji's blind spot. Can Neji turn Kidomaru's attack back onto the attacker?

Naruto, Shikamaru, Kiba and Akamaru are in hot pursuit of Sasuke and the Sound ninja. Meanwhile, Orochimaru lies on the verge of death.

Akamaru sets explosives in the trees to trap Sakon, but an incensed Sakon turns the tables. Meanwhile, Tayuya steadily advances towards Naruto's team.

Shikamaru tries to stop Tayuya, who uses her Summoning Jutsu to call forth three giants. And the battle between Kimimaro and Naruto is about to begin.

Ukon enters Kiba's body. Naruto is shocked by the power of Kimimaro's Kekkai Genkai, and Shikamaru is in a desperate battle with Tayuya.

An injured Kiba and Akamaru barely escape from Sakon and Ukon. Naruto is locked in battle with Kimimaro, and Shikamaru fights Tayuya's three giants.

Shikamaru succeeds in trapping Tayuya, but Tayuya fights back. Kiba tends to Akamaru and his own wounds. Naruto is having trouble defeating Kimimaro.

With Rock Lee there to take on Kimimaro, Naruto is free to chase after Sasuke. Lee attacks, and Kimimaro is pushed back by Lee's fierce taijutsu.

Shikamaru, Kiba and Lee are at the limits of their strength when Gaara, Temari and Kankuro appear to assist their Leaf allies.

Kimimaro realizes that close combat is impossible against Gaara's wall of sand, so he moves further away for a long-distance attack. Gaara is unfazed.

Kimimaro shatters Gaara's sand shield and attacks Gaara. Naruto finally catches up to Sasuke, who is racing to his destiny at Orochimaru's hands.

With the Curse Mark covering half his body, Sasuke is changed. Naruto charges at this new Sasuke who has turned his back on his closest comrades.

Sasuke is determined to go to Orochimaru. He tells Naruto that in order to surpass his brother, Itachi, power and hatred are necessary.

Naruto is brought down by Sasuke's Fireball Jutsu. This was the first jutsu Sasuke's father taught him when he was a boy.

Sasuke watches Naruto sink in the water. He recalls when his friends and parents were killed by Itachi, who had mastered the Mangekyo Sharingan jutsu.

Kakashi uses his Summoning Jutsu and sends ninja dogs to track Naruto and Sasuke. With his newfound strength, Sasuke sets out to bring down Naruto.

Naruto releases his Nine-Tail chakra and sends Sasuke flying. Sasuke accuses Naruto, who doesn't have a family, of not understanding his feelings.

Naruto's Nine-Tail chakra seems to move with a will of its own as it counters Sasuke's powerful attacks. Sasuke's body undergoes a transformation.

The fierce battle with Sasuke leaves Naruto unconscious, and Kakashi arrives at his side. Shikamaru is deeply affected by the failure of the mission.

Sakura tries to sneak out of the village to find Sasuke but Naruto intercepts her. They're sent to the Land of Rice Paddies where Sasuke's been taken.

Naruto, Sakura and Jiraiya search for information in the Land of Rice Paddies. Naruto and Sakura meet Sasame, who is being pursued by an assailant.

Naruto, Sakura and Sasame are attacked by Kamikiri, Jigumo and Kagero of the Fuma Clan. Jiraiya arrives just in time and joins in the fight.

Jiraiya uses his Summoning Jutsu to call out Gamakichi. With Gamakichi leading, the shinobi advance up winding stairways and through long tunnels.

Just as Kabuto's about to hurl his kunai at Sakura, Naruto forces Kabuto to use up his knives. Kabuto responds with his Misty Flames Dance Jutsu.

Naruto tries to shield Sakura from an attack and is wounded by Kamikiri. Arashi unleashes Fuma Ninja Art -- the Spell of the Mandala, a secret jutsu.

Naruto gets upset when Jiraiya sets out on a mission without him. Tsunade comes across a piece of important data from the Maximum Security Prison.

Shizune pursues Mizuki, who has escaped from the Maximum Security Prison. Naruto senses Orochimaru is behind Mizuki's escape and approaches Tsunade.

Raijin and Fujin possess superhuman strength. Naruto uses his Shadow Clone Jutsu to buy time, but then a super-strong trio appears to help him out.

Shikamaru, Ino and Choji come to the rescue. The three have been sent by Tsunade to assist, allowing Naruto and Pakkun to go after Mizuki.

Naruto discovers that Tsubaki is Mizuki's fiancée. When Mizuki attacks the Nara medical research team, Tsunade wonders what Mizuki was after.

Naruto and Iruka are left in a daze by the power of Mizuki's chakra. Naruto counters with a jutsu but is quickly rebuffed. Iruka brings out his kunai.

Kiba, Shino and Hinata have come up with an idea to use the Bikochu beetle -- a rare beetle with a keen sense of smell -- to find Sasuke.

Squad 8 and Naruto arrive at the Bikochu's habitat. They use a photo to aid their search, but Naruto can't tell the difference between the bugs.

Hinata's kidnapped by the Kamizuru Clan. To find the hidden scroll of their founder, which contains forbidden jutsu, they search for a Bikochu beetle.

Naruto, Kiba and Shino are cornered in the hive of a queen bee. Shino declares that unless Hinata is freed, they will not hand over the Bikochu.

Tsunade orders Naruto, Lee, Neji and Tenten on a mission to the Katabami Gold Mine to remove the Kurosuki Family, who have taken over the town.

The Kurosuki gang captures Rokusuke, and Raiga tells him that he will hold a funeral for him. Naruto can no longer keep his temper in check.

Raiga and Ranmaru use their Hidden Mist jutsu to conceal themselves in Katabami Gold Mine, where even Neji's Byakugan can't detect them.

The Kurosuki family is dispersed, and peace returns to Katabami Gold Mine. However, Karashi seems to be up to something.

Raiga comes back to life and sees Ranmaru lying deathly still on the ground. Despondent, Raiga unleashes violent thunder. Tenten tries to stop Raiga.

Lee keeps on fighting desperately, but the tornado that envelops Raiga's attack takes the form of a dragon and swallows him up.

Naruto is chosen to lead Konohamaru, Moegi and Udon in a survival training exercise, and they set off for Mount Takurami to find a secret scroll.

Tsunade orders Naruto, Hinata, Kiba and Akamaru to capture Gosunkugi, a thief. They head to the Land of Stone, where they suspect he's hiding.

Naruto and the others tend to an injured Sazanami, who says that he's trying to clear his name after being framed for a murder committed by Gosunkugi.
